Whiplash is an injury that occurs when a traumatic force is applied to the body causing the head to move forwards and backwards in an abrupt fashion. Whiplash is condition caused by injury / strain of the muscles and ligaments that move and supports the spine and head.
It is often caused by car accidents, but can also be caused by contact sports such as football. Symptoms may delay in presentation following injury, pain may be felt in the neck, shoulders and mid back and can radiate down the entire back.
Management in severe cases requires consultation with a sports doctor. Treatment will involve massage therapy, gentle mobilization, stretching and strengthening of musculature.
