Piriformis syndrome is pain in the hip caused by compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle. Symptoms such as aching, numbness and tingling or shooting pains that may move down into the leg and foot are often experienced. This is due to the fact that the sciatic nerve runs underneath the piriformis.
Athletes that do repetitive forward motion in their sport such as runners, cyclists and weightlifters often develop this due to the lack of lateral motion occurring at the hip. This lack of motion allows the hip stabilizers to weaken and the lateral rotators such as the piriformis to tighten compressing the nerve.
Management involves massage therapy, stretching and strengthening of the hip stabilizers.
