The calcaneus is the heel bone, spurs are spikes of bone that can be seen on the x-ray. The heel spur is seen under the heel bone and seems to be seen more commonly in patients who have plantar fasciitis.
Management of this condition involves utilizing the RICE regime (rest, ice, compression and elevation), massage therapy, correcting abnormal bio-mechanics of the foot, altering footwear and training. In severe cases cortisone injection may be required and rarely surgical intervention is required.
