A Bunion is an enlargement of bone or tissue around the base of the big toe (1st Metatarsal Phalangeal Joint). The big toe may turn in toward the second toe and the tissues surrounding the joint may be swollen and tender. The bump is the swollen bursal sac and/or a boney deformity that has grown on the big toe joint.
Conservative management consists of RICE management (rest, ice, compression and elevation), massage therapy and bunion wedges to correct alignment and changing footwear to decrease pressure. More severe bunions may require surgical intervention.
